My hospital does what they call outpatient picc placement, md's call admitting and schedual a picc insertion, We are trying to streamline this process. I'm wondering if any other hospital does this and has any pathway or preprinted order sheets to help us out, Thanks in advance
Our Hospital has a PICC team and we are just getting started. We have pre printed order sheets already in place. What we have done so far is have the MD's office call scheduling to set up or if it is to happen that day, we just schedule with the OPD when they have a room available. We FAX the order sheet over to the office or just simply take an over the phone order and write it that way. Hope this helps. Jane
We created an outpatient picc program at our hospital-the first of it's kind in our area.
Start with the vision, in other words, what services you want to provide for the patient. We wanted to do the insurance, lab work, social work piece, and co-ordinate with the outpatient infusion company/center/service.
Next you need to meet with all the stakeholders, and develop a process. BTW, that includes interventional radiology. We put together an algorithm during this step.
Only after you do this can you create the documents you need to make your program work for physicians, patients, and your facility.
As with so many things we do in nursing, there is also monitoring and follow-up. There will be complications-how will you deal with those?
If you want to email me, I can share our order sheet and instructions with you.
We have had an out-patient program for years. Dr has to have hospital priveledges to order any proceedure here. A booking clerk arranges the date/time after receiving the signed prewritten orders and a referral sheet. We schedule an out-patient first each morning, if it's ASAP and the spots are already taken, the clerk contacts the PICC RN for an okay to book an extra out-pt. (One PICC RN for the hospital)
The pre-orders just cover the PICC, X-ray, referral to angio if needed. The referral form is mostly a check-list with basic info, such as mastectomy/fistula, which side? pacemaker? previous difficulty with IVs or PICC? Immune compromised? as well as the diagnosis, allergies, treatment.
