Policies for Nurses placing CVC's

Does anyone have a policy and procedures for placing CVC's?   Thanks

Gina Ward
  I am assuming you are

I am assuming you are referring to a policy on nurses placing PICC lines correct?  I know some nurses and hospitals are venturing out and nurses are placing femoral lines as well as juglar lines, PICC catheters.  We only do a line inserted into the arm at this point.

there are many policies in this website.  go to the resource section and then look it up , under policies or education I am not sure.

When we first started our program we used the sample policy in the Bard book that we used for training resource as a model.

The I.N.S. also has sample policy book that is a great resources.

I certainly have a policy in our hospital as I am sure all the others do as well.  If you would like that let me know and I can email to you.

CVC insertion

This conversation involves CVC insertion, not PICC.  The majority of states in the U.S. now permit nurse inserted IJ, SC, and/or femoral placement (permission due to decision tree or direct petition, depending on the state).

Nurses placing CVC

HI,  I would be glad to share what we have developed and our references in Colorado.

FOR OTHER COLORADO NURSES:  I was instructed by a board representative to seek inclusion of CVC insertion to our scope by approval from the board.  Appeared at their meeting today.  The representative was incorrect; we merely follow our decision tree.  That was my argument for inclusion.  The board neither permits nor prohibits.

SO, if you need references to approach your institution, I have compiled many, feel free to contact me.

Bottom line: CVC insertion meets all elements of the CO nurse decision tree, so may be included in CO nursing practice.

STATES SEEKING APPROVAL FOR RN CVC INSERTION:  I did a lot of research to put this petition together, and I am glad to share.

Please put CVC insertion as the subject (to sort out the neverending SPAM)

Peace.

 States that use the decision

States that use the decision tree model do not need to go to the board of nursing. This is the model recommended by the National Council on State Board of Nursing and the questions are very similar from state to state. I think there are about half of the states using this model now, maybe more. Lynn
