midline
What are viewers thoughts on the drawing of blood samples from midlines. Our information  says not too but other literature I have read doesnt agree with this. I understand it will increase the risk of occluding the line but feel you would weigh up the pros and cons as you would a PICC

A midline lines in a peripheral vein, unlike a PICC whose tip resides in the very large SVC. So using a midline for obtaining blood samples may increase vein irritation (aka phlebitis, thrombosis) and decrease the life of your line. So the standards of practice state to not use a midline for routine blood sampling. As with anything you would weigh the risk vs benefits for each patient. Lynn
