Does anyone's facility actually have a policy in place for only clinicaly indicated peripheral IV starts vs 72/96 hours in the adult population. I realize the CDC recommends only clinically indicated peripheral IV starts in children but no recommendations in adults. I can't figure out what the difference would be besides kids don't like to be poked, however, neither do adults?

I totally agree with you on the peds vs adults. I do think the only reason for this peds statement is the difficulty in sticking kids, but many adults can be equally as difficult. When you look at the studies about this, the clinical outcomes for each group are no different. Remember CDC is only considering infection and the studies are considering all complications. Lynn
