KVO rates

I was wondering if anyone knows the most minimal KVO or infusion rate that has proven to not result in occlusions in PICC lines? And if so is it referenced in the INS standards?

I have seen...

KVO rates of 0.2 cc/hr keeping the PICC open, and I have seen 0.2cc/hr in a PICC where occlusion occurred. A hearty, more robust rate like 5 cc/hr fairs better.

There is no such rate proven

There is no such rate proven to maintain catheter patency. Nothing in the SOP. An order for KVO is not a complete legal order as there needs to be a specific rate prescription. There are many more factors in VAD patency than just flow rate. Wish it were that simple. Lynn
