TIME OUT FOR picc

Dear Readers

Presently we are not utilizing a second person to perform a time out prior to PICC insertion. The conscious pause is done by the person performing the procedure. Can you tell me if this is standard practice or are most of you calling in another professional to pause with you.

Thank you in advance

Mary

 I have not seen any

I have not seen any standards or guidelines that call for a time-out for any type of CVAD insertion. However, the SHEA Compendium and the INS Standards call for completion of a checklist which could include a time out. This checklist completion must be performed by someone other than the inserter, so a second person is needed for the entire procedure. The purpose is to closely observe all technique as the inserter can not observe themselves. This second person does not need to be another inserter. It can be a trained unlicensed assistant. Lynn

TIME OUT

Dear Lynn,
Thanks for your reply. I respect your information and will share with the managers.
I believe you may find reference of the time out requirement in JCAHO Universal Protocol. We have made it a part of our policy. I will take your suggestions to the staff and we will be perhaps changing our process.

Thank you again.

Not sure how the protocol is

Not sure how the protocol is worded but it might apply to surgical settings. Time out may be helpful for a CVAD insertion but the principles are hard to apply for a CVAD insertion. Lynn
