Here is the question.
A Port A Cath that is has the Huber needle changed weekly for every other day infusions in the home.
How often do you flush and lock the port. Daily or "with each infusion"? S 40.1, 40.2, 40.3
Please include rational.
Thanks

Before each infusion assess patency by aspirating for blood return and flushing with 10 ml NS. After each infusion flush with 10 ml NS followed by the chosen locking solution. When there is no infusion all VADs must be flushed and locked between infusions. Lynn

Flush and lock our implanted ports which are accessed at least daily, but if the pt is getting an IVAB q 6 hrs, for instance, then after our NS flush, then the port gets flushed with 10 unit per ml Heparin Flush solution. INS standards state to use the lowest concentration of heparin flush.
INS Standards state that either normal saline OR heparin 10 units per mL can be used. Also there may be prescription to use an Antimicrobial locking solution. Lynn
