Hello All
Our Vascular Access Team places hundreds of PICC lines a year in a large 400 bed hospital. We follow full sterile precautions with a hat, mask, sterile gloves and gown and full sized sterile drape.
Do we need to follow OR guidelines for a sterile bedside PICC placement procedure? Does the hat need to cover the ears? Are we to wear a surgical mask with a string tie as opposed to the one with the ear loop? What aspects of the bedside PICC placement guideline differ from the OR placed PICC line?
Thank you. Agi
The standard as defined by CDC and INS for all CVAD insertion is "maximal barrier precautions" which includes mask, gown, protective eyewear, cap, gloves, large or full body drapes, and towels. The level of detail you are asking about is not included in this standard. See INS SOP #33 and definition in the Glossary. Lynn
