Do you ever use a face shield and/or goggles when insertion a peripheral IV catheter? If so, what conditions or patient characterisitcs would warrent its use? Do you have a written policy about this or is it left to the judgment of the individual nurse? Thanks for any feedback or comments, Lynn
I don't ever use a face shield for PIV insertion. We don't have a policy that addresses it.
I do use a mask with face shield for PICC insertion. Using that or goggles is up to the judgment of individual nurse.

About two years to three years ago, our hospital started requiring it. In the last 6 to 9 mos, it was changed to optional. Because I had trained myself to always use it, I still do.

Only if the Pt. has a open tracheostomy or is known to be coughing. Our eye shields are on a simple mask, like the pictue on the left of the page.
