Pediatric PICC Placement Training Opportunities?

Hello all

As part of my grand quest to develop a Vascular Access Team I want to improve my PICC team's pediatric success rate. We have a large pediatric population that could really use a stronger team! We feel our success rate on the under 2-3 yrs population is abysmal. We have a great team of Pediatric Intensivists and PICU RN's that manage the sedations for us. However, our team is made up entirely of RN's with adult ICU experience. We service all pediatric patients this side of the NICU. Babies scare us! And as I am reading and learning more I am seeing that kiddos can't be treated like tiny adults.

I am working on getting sponsorship (or writing a grant) to go to another facility for training. Our facility just does not have anyone to teach us. My big idea is to find a pediatric hospital that places a lot of PICC's and travel there for some sort of fellowship program. I realize this is complicated and will require licensure in other states and lots of red tape. Does anyone have experience either doing this sort of thing or sponsoring a program of this nature?

I would love any advice you can give.

Martha, We are actually in

Martha,

We are actually in the process of developing such a fellowship program. We would be interested in hearing what components you would find meaningful. I am not sure where you are located, but would be very willing to have a conversation with you about this. We can also communicate directly, if you wish.

I know that Cinncinnati Children's has had a program such as this in the past, but not sure if they still offer it.
