I have questions for pediatric hospitals with PICC/IV teams. Under which department do you operate and do you have a medical director? If so, how involved is your director in the operations of the team. I realize this has been discussed before but I am specifically interested in peds. Thanks Angela Lee
Our IV/PICC team covers the hospital and are there own entiety. They have a medical director and are currently looking for manager. Our OR PICC team work in conjunction with the IV team and we also answer to the same medical director. Our combined efforts are producing about 1400-1600 piccs per year. The medical director is involved but more to the extent of our monthly access device meetings and our PICC SME group. When it comes to placement we are independent.
Thank you for your response. Where do you work? How large is your facility? Are you saying that you do not fall under nursing or radiology or any other department? To whom do you report in the management ladder? Is your medical director a surgeon, ID doc or what? Do you have an IR department? Thanks, Angela
Boston Childrens Hospital. Our PICC team falls under nursing and in the OR we report to our Management, the IV team reports to there manager, however for PICCs we collaborate with the IV team on a daily basis. Often they will call us and ask us to assist with placement on the floors or in the units. Our CEO is a surgeon and yes we have an IR department that place PICCs if we cannot get them in. (They are not interested in the PICC business but for the difficult patients we do send them to IR)
