I am wondering what people are doing about replacing field sticks/time frame. Are you using INS Standard 44 which says VADs placed in an emergency situation shall be placed asap and not later than 48 hours?
Also, are you considering PIV placed in-house under emergency situations in the same manner?
Thank you,
Kathleen Wilsonre
INS language follows CDC language on this issue - they are the same. This is not restricted to only peripheral catheters but applies to any catheter inserted during any emergent situation regardless of where it occurs. When you can not follow proper aseptic technique, clean skin, skin antisepsis, hand hygiene, sterile insertion, etc, then the catheter must be removed within 48 h or as soon as patient is stable. This does mean that this information must be passed on during hand-off communications. I have seen legal cases where this was a significant issue in the set of facts in the case. Lynn

I found that INS standard references the CDC recommendations from 2002. I know that was available when the latest INS standards were being prepared.
I have been questioned by someone who is purporting that the new 2011 CDC standards doesn't address this topic. I have looked for itin the document, but cannot put my finger on it. Am I missing it? Or, is this a change in the CDC guidelines from 2002 to 2011?
Thank you.

The statement is still present, although it is listed under Central Venous Catheters on page 10 of the downloaded version. This is the same language as the 2002 edition, so my opinion would say this applies to all catheters (peripheral and central) inserted in any location (inside or outside the hospital) when correct aseptic technique can not be used. Where they placed this statement can be confusing though. Lynn
