IV Sites and Showering

What do you use to protect peripheral IV sites and PICC sites when a patient showers in the hospital?  What do you have patients use at home?

Thanks for any input on this.

Inpatients are given plastic

Inpatients are given plastic wrap and tape to keep IV sites dry. Outpatients are told to wrap in plastic or plastic bag. I suggest elastic bands that are snug but do not cut off circulation. Just snug enough to prevent water getting in. This video shows another solution using press-n-seal wrap (example is picc dressing but could work for peripheral). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOfUgcS58gM

 A palpation sleeve works

A palpation sleeve works great. These are gloves used by veterninary doctors for the delivery of large animals. They have formed fingers and extend up to the shoulder. Small quantities could be purchased from a local vet or large quantities could be ordered from a vet supply house. Many years ago, a nurse from KY taught me this trick. There are several commercial products such as Aquaguard and Bathguard also available. Some of these are designed in the same way that cast protectors are designed. So there are lots of options. Lynn
