When a central venous catheter is placed in the IJ, we try to get it removed as soon as feasible or it gets exchanged on a regular basis. What about an IJ PICC? Our IR docs currently place the IJ PICCS and they are wondering if those should be exchanged every 5-7 days. Is there evidence to back leaving the PICC in place indefinitely like other PICCs?
Second Question: for those PICC teams who do not place IJ PICCs, would you be willing to do the exchanges on them if needed as opposed to sending the patient back to IR for the exchange?
There is no evidence that any CVAD should be automatically exchanged at XX number of days to reduce infection risk. Exchange should only be done when clinically indicated such as a damaged catheter or malpositioned tip. IJ PICCs would be no different than any other PICC or other type of CVAD. Lynn

Not sure there is such a thing as an IJ PICC.....beteter check the PICC product you are using to see if the Instructions for Use (IFU) support it being placed in the IJ as compared to the upper extremity.

Your IR may be placing a cuffed power line in the IJ or they may be placiing a power Hohn in the IJ
Usually this is what IR places in the IJ as both of these products are market labeled for the IJ
Both of these products are market labeled for long term dwell >30 days
