PICC "Teams"

Anybody still doing 2-nurse PICC insertions?

Yes, on babies that are less

Yes, on babies that are less than 4 kg, kids with floppy extremeties, kids with CP where the arm needs to be held for positioning. However if I had my two cents and way all of them would be performed with 2 RN's

 I think Mass. General in

I think Mass. General in Boston has these teams but there is one RN and one unlicensed assistant. I definitely believe that someone must be an assistant during the procedure and help to meet the patient's needs while the RN is doing the actual procedure. But I don't think this has to be another RN, and certainly not another PICC inserting RN. Lynn

Is this saying that no one

Is this saying that no one should be doing an insertion totally alone?  I understand the second doesn't have to be an RN.  Where I work we work alone and when we get in the room everyone seems to scatter.

 I would recommend that you

I would recommend that you read the INS standard of practice on VAD insertion. There is a specific statement about what you must be able to accomplish. Then you decide if you can meet this standard with only the person inserting the VAD or if it requires 2 people to meet this standard. The statement does not specify the number of people, but it establishes the standard of what you need to meet. Lynn

We do our PICC's as 2 person

We do our PICC's as 2 person procedures.  We don't always use another IV therapist to do this either.  We are a pediatric team, and it is great if 2 of our staff can do the procedure, but that is not always possible.  We have recruited student nurses, floor nurses, house supervisors, etc. to be the second person.  We can talk them thru what we need them to do.  Our adult hospital also does 2 person insertions.  Things go faster, thus increasing productivity.  If the first person is not successful, then the second person is there to also work on the process.  While the inserter is finishing documentation, etc., the second person is on to the next person to get things set up, check consent, etc.

Until some organization

Until some organization states that there MUST be 2 people in the room at all times there will not be. It comes down to the money. Yes it wold be nice to have some one with you to set up and move equipment. While I prottect my sterile feild to the best of my ability, a second set of eye would help. That is why I always am extremly cautious. If i think I might have contaminated my gloves and a peice of equipement, get a new one no questions. I did find at this an second person could slow me down too
