Rememer that Lidocaine is an ACLS drug for treatment of ventricular arhythmias. I would not push Lodocaine because of ther risk of unintended cardiac consequences. I do not believe there is any data to validate efficacy for breaking vascular spasms, but you could certainly break the heart rhythm.
I see that no one has responded to your question and am wondering if that means that no one is using lidocaine by IV push for this purpose. I think there are many other ways to prevent vasospasm and to get it to relax when it happens and that IV push lidocaine is a risky drug when the patient does not have true clinical indications for its use. How frequently do you experience this problem? Is it a specific type or age of patient? When in the procedure does it occur? This is contraction of smooth muscles instead of skeletal muscles, so you must choose a drug that will work on smooth muscles. Have you also tried child life therapist for distraction techniques, etc. I would be very hesitant to use IV lidocaine for this purpose in any patient especially a child. Lynn
