Looking for the National Average for time to allow for PICC placement, pre-assessment through clearance for use (either by CXR or other means).
Hoping someone can direct me to written information, but would also like to hear it "from the trenches"

Prior to the recent start-up of a national database, there was no method for collecting data for any type of catheter. The only national database was from the CDC on CLABSI. So nothing published yet from the new national database on any of these questions. Lynn

The national data base does collect procedure time. Publications are in the works, I think it will be very interesting to see what is happening on a national level, right from nurses that are actually placing these devices.
In the INS Team Implementation module (which you can buy on the INS website) it gives you an estimated time of 2 hours. INS is estimating an hour for the procedure time, personally my procedure time can be from 15-to 45 minutes. This time depends on patient anxiety, how well they were informed by the physician on details like where the infection is, how long they will be on the prescribed therapy, will this be at skilled facility, home or at an out patient infusion center, how clean the room and so on. Below is an example from INS on how to calculate nursing time for a PICC insertion. They also include other Vascular Access Specialist responsibilities such as dressing changes, PIV starts and blood draws(not listed).
