What is the best way to approach a patient with an employee that would like to insert an IV site on the patient?  The employee is in the learning process and has practiced on a training arm.

Choose patients with exceptionally good veins, perhaps those healthy adults coming in for same day surgery. Do not choose patients that have chronic diseases or are immunocompromised for any reason. This will ensure the best outcome for the learner and the patient. Choose patients that you thing would be cooperative with having someone make an attempt who is learning this procedure. If this nurse has had previous experience, I will explain to the patient that the reason for 2 nurses is because the new nurse is in orientation and we have to ensure that all staff members are doing things according to the hospital policy and procedure. Before you go to the patient, have a communication system between the preceptor and the learner. If the learner needs to stop and the preceptor take over, this communication signal is used. This is so you don't cause alarm for patient. Lynn
