I have a potential research question:
Does your facility allow nurses assistants to remove Peripheral IV lines?
Why or Why not...

It is possible for any unlicensed assistive person to perform some infusion related tasks including PIV insertion and removal. The key is to have a facility policy and procedure and to document competency with the delegated tasks. You should also check with your state nursing board to see if they have any rules about delegation as this is what will or will not allow this practice. It is not acceptable for one unit to allow this without a hospital wide policy, procedure and documented competency. It is also critical for all RNs to remember that the RN is held accountable for the outcome with delegated tasks as they are the licensed professional. Lynn

I would not be comfortable with this in our facility. Part of removal of an IV includes assessing the site, and the tip of the catheter, and then documenting in the patient's medical record.
In Vermont, this is outside of the scope of practice for LNAs.

We have a very select few CNA's that are allowed to remove PIV's. They have been trained and maintain an annual competency in the skill. They only work in Same Day Surgery where the skill is used frequently.
