Choosing the right vascular access device

Hi,

I am  an IV therapy clinical nurse specialist in the United Kingdom. As part of my ongoing studies, I am putting together an algorithim for medical and nursing staff in selecting the correct device to meet the patients needs, based upon the type of infusate and duration of proposed treatment, taking into account patient factors.

I was wondering if anyone has any evidence to support this, I have only been able to find non-empirical evidence so far. I am unaware of any studies which explore this topic. Also I would be interested if anyone has created such an algorithim (and are happy to share it with me) and how they went about implementing it into the clinical areas.

Thank you in advance for your help with this

Angela,

The Ontario Nurses Association (RNAO) released a very comprehensive report on 'Assessment and Device Selection for Vascular Access'. If you goggle them, you should find this info.
