Huber needle sizes

Good morning!

A doctor has requested that I access a port-a-cath, on an obese patient, using a 2" Huber needle. Has anyone ever done this? Does any company make a 2" Huber?

I have accessed this patient several times with a 1.5" Huber, which she manages to dislodge with movement of her arm. I thought about putting a wide strip of silk tape over the tegaderm to keep the Huber in place, yet the patient states this does not work.

Any suggestions are very welcome!

Statlock use to make a stabilization device for port access needles, but I am not sure if it is still available. If a 2 inch length is required, then I don't think a stabilization device would solve the problem. Smith's Medical lists a 2 inch straight port access needle in a 19 g on their website, but straight ones are not designed for leaving in for any length of time. Sounds like the port may need to be revised. Is that a possibility? Lynn

I spoke with the doctor, as all I could find were non-safety 2" Huber needles.

Great minds think alike! He is going to discuss the port with the surgeon, and hopefully come up with a better placement of the port itself in order for us to access it easily.
