IV Stabilization for pediatrics

I am a vascular access nurse for a small pediatric hospital.  We have recently stopped using coflex and do not want to go back to kerlex to wrap the IV site.  We used these to  prevent the patient from pulling it out or stabilizing the site.  Sometimes they get so upset that they sweat and the tape/Tegaderm does not stick well.  Any suggestions for securement.  Our IVs have the wings to help with stabilization, but sometimes without kerlex or coflex the tape doesn't stick and the IV falls out.

Thanks,

Jennifer

So glad you want to change

So glad you want to change this old practice. Roller bandages are not included as a stabilization device and can add to the problem of poor site assessment. The site is too difficult to see and palpate as needed. The same types of stabilization devices used on adults are also used in children such as Statlock. Most companies have stabilization devices made for children. You should also check the protection devices from companies such as IV House. They have a new handboard design that allows for easy assessment of the entire extremity. Also see the INS Standard on VAD Stabilization. Lynn
