Find out the length of catheter. Head of bed slightly elevated with affected arm below level of the heart. wash hands, open 4x4 gauze and betadine ointment maintaining sterility, don exam gloves, remove dressing, lift statlock device using alcohol as needed, cleanse site with alcohol if needed or if cath tip is to be cultured, remove cath slowly, pulling parallel to skin, maintaining gentle constant traction and regrasping the cath every few centimeters, if vasospasm occurs stop, tape cath in place and wait 5-10 minutes until subsides. as catheter exits site apply pressure with 4x4 gauze, hold pressure for 5 minutes, remove 4x4 place betadine ointment and 2x2 gauze or vaseline gauze if allergic to betadine, cover with transparent dressing.
