IV Tubing-Transfer from UVC to PICC

Hi Lynn,

I received a question and I'm not sure how to answer.  Do you know of any evidence either supporitng or discouraging the transfer of IV tubing/infusion from one type of CVC , such as a UVC to a PICC or vice versa?  One of our NICU managers asked me this question.  I'm concerned about contamination of the tubing during the transfer.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Julie Stalf

 The Infusion Nursing

The Infusion Nursing Standards of Practice, applicable to all infusion patients and settings, calls for a new IV set each time a new catheter is inserted. So moving a used set from a catheter of any type to a new catheter is below the Standard of Practice. The risk is moving a potentially contaminated set to a new catheter. All needleless connectors, catheter hubs, and catheters are known to grow biofilm and this is the first step in developing CRBSI. Lynn
