I have just finished a huge literature review on this issue. Use of sterile procedure is not found in the literature but what is recommended to reduce false positive results is skin prep with alcoholic CHG, drawing samples by a phlebotomy team, cleaning the top of the culture bottles, NOT drawing from a PIV at insertion, diversion (discarding) of the first sample when drawing from a peripheral stick to remove skin organisms, and NOT discarding the first specimen when drawing from a CVAD. Using a CVAD for blood culturing should only be done when the CVAD is the suspected cause. Blood culture kits and a procedure checklist is also found in the literature. Lynn
We are currently working on an online course about all blood sampling processes. I am hoping to have this ready by the end of next week. More details will be announced soon about registration, contact hours, etc. You can go to our website and sign up for our newsletter or connect with Lynn Hadaway Associates on Facebook. The next edition of the INS Standards of Practice will have more information about all phlebotomy and be released in Jan. 2016. Thanks Lynn

Can we look forward to this excellent list of guidelines being published in a single reference?
