Non-licensed personel accessing ports

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone have any information supporting non-licensed personel (medical assistants, certified nursing assistance, techs, lab techs, etc.) accessing, flushing, and drawing labs from implanted ports.  Our hospital is having this discussion.  Accessing ports has always been an RN responsibility.  Does INS have a position statement regarding this?  Are there any articles supporting or not supporting this practice?  How about ONS, do they have any information about who should be accessing ports?  I feel that there is more to a port than just accessing it.  Knowing how they funtion, why the patient has the port, and how to troubleshoot complications is important to understand when working with ports.  If anyone knows of any references, please share.  Thanks for your help.
