PICC line dressing changes with use of catheter securment devices

I am interested to know how other facilities perform PICC line dressing changes when using catheter securement devices, such as 3M or Statlock that attach to the wings.

It makes sense that by removing the securement device with clean gloves that have touched the outer dressing, etc., that there could be cross-contamination, that might not be covered with the Chloraprep disinfectant.

How are others performing this procedure?

Thank you for your feedback.

We use the SorbaView Shield

We use the SorbaView Shield with built in securement for several years now. Much easier to use and I have had no problems with PICCs remaining secure. The nursing time for dressing changes decreased dramatically too. Hope this helps. And, I trialed it on myself with my demo PICC taped to my arm for 1 week because I have VERY sensitive skin. Not a mark on my arm after removal :) Valorie

Securement Devices/Accidental Dislodgment Info

I know some securement devices say that you do not need to change the entire securment device everytime you change the dressing. The nurses I've talked to leave the StatLock in place, clean around it, and re dress the site accordingly. I've heard that removal of the securment device increases the risk of catheter migration.

Our unit was experiencing a lot of accidental "pull outs", and were investigating securement devices. We put together a 2 minute RN survey to try and see how much patients have their PICCs, CVCs and PIVs pulled out (either accidentally or intentionally) respective to unit type. We would love anyone with infusion experience to fill this out!

The link to the google doc survey is here - docs.google.com/forms/d/1nniddCaHG-_XTNI4aYlDPVxAyKjbnJXmxlJ3Ggrnoac/viewform
