If you admit a patient with a midline that was placed at an OSH, do you remove it? Per my hospital policy, a peripheral IV must be changed within 24 hours. Per policy, "The midline catheter is not a central line and is considered a peripheral IV because the tip terminates in the patient's upper arm. The catheter is for short-term use with max dwell time of 29 days." Because a midline is considered a PIV, per policy I must remove it within 24 hours, correct? I am in the process of changing to "clinically-indicated removal" but I'd like to know what I should do now. Thanks!
What is OSH? I would not remove a midline unless there was a clinical indication for removal. Your current policy sounds like it did not consider midline therefore would not apply.
