Is any one aware of EBP for drawing blood cultures from PICCs in neonates. Although peripheral sticks are preferred, there are times when the culture has be drawn through the line.
Are you flushing first?
Wasting?
Not wasting?
Anyone stil reinfusing? I thought this fell out favor.
Literature searches thus far haven't provided the information.
Thanks,

When drawing a culture from any CVAD, do NOT flush first but draw the first sample for the lav. ALWAYS remove the needleless connector as this has been shown in 2 studies to cause false positives. NEVER reinfuse the first sample as this can easily be contaminated or contain clots. Lynn
