Cathfo is for "central venous access devices". A midline is considered a long peripheral catheter so I suspect using cathflo in a midline would be off label use. I am not affiliated with any infusion prodect companies. Valorie
I would assume that is the reason. The research was conducted on CVADs, therefore the manufacturer can not extend the labeling to include midlines without doing additional research on Cathflo use in midlines. Others could conduct such research but it would not be used to change the labeling unless the manufacturer chose to use that research and resubmit to the FDA. There are strict requirements for product labeling by the FDA. But the FDA does not control what healthcare professionals do. If the use of Cathflo in a midline is in the patient's best interest, then it would be the professionals decisions to use it for this off-label use. Lynn
Thank you Lynn, I am asked this question quite frequently and I have researched to find no contraindications to its use other than being off label. Just wanted to make sure.
Your issue there is how long would the midline stay open after declotting it? I am assuming that this midline is not being used for routine blood sampling.

Thanks.
I researched this in the past and cathflo is not approved for use on midlines by the FDA. So it would be off label use.
Does anyone have information as to why Cathflo cannot be used in midlines? Is it that it has never been tested?
