What is the correct procedure for changing cap/connectors to the hubs of Central Venous Access Devices? Does one need to clean the hub or catheter/hub junction before removing it from the catheter hub? One source says that AFTER the connector cap is removed, they clean around the hub BUT do not touch the inside of the catheter. Another source, says to scrub the connector cap and hub BEFORE they remove it. And if one does clean, does it matter if it is alcohol versus CHG?
Thank you!
Deb
No studies on this at all. The only way to reach the luer locking threads of the female catheter hub is to clamp the catheter extension leg, remove the old set or connector, clean with an alcohol wipe, let it thoroughly dry, then attach the new set or connector. I will be discussing a new study on the various agents used for cleaning in our videoconference on April 24 at 1 pm, on Needleless Connectors. Thank you, Lynn. We thought maybe that would be 'the story'.
