We been using what I think would be termed a closed system PIV called Nexiva by BD. Generally, I like the catheter becuase there is not risk of blood exposure and in Pediatrics it's easier than connecting the extension tubing to a wiggling child. The technqiue for insertion is very different from other catheters so that is the biggest challenge. BD was great about support the staff and in-servicing the hospital. I am not on the IV team here but I can tell you they really like the Nexvia's. We used Jelco's before.
