Are you looking to locate nerves in order to avoid them, or in order to perform nerve blocks? Most of us who teach PICC insertion classes are teaching recognition of nerves and lymph nodes, etc., to assist in reducing complications. However, performing nerve blocks is another issue. I suggest you contact Sonosite. I am seen a presentation by a sonographer to anesthesiologists regarding nerve recognition on ultrasound for nerve blocks, and it was done by Sonosite.
When I recieved my education and training on PICC insertions, the only info I recieved on nerves was avoid the brachial vein because of the close proximity to the nerves that lie there.
I was never trained on visualization of nerves and especially never any mention of lymph nodes. As I cotinued placing PICC lines I have heard or read of the nerve having a "honeycomb" appearance. Very rare that I have ever seen that myself. Also talk of a thicker whiter sheath like appearance on top or around the brachial vein .
I have searched and even taken a class or two on line about US guidance that says it coveres advance techniques but still no helpful info on visualizing nerves or lymph nodes.
I have unfortunatley hit my share of nerves and would LOVE any help in further identification of nerves, and as a bonus lymph nodes.
