We have a dialysis nurse in our facility 3 days a week. If the patient spikes a fever, the doctor orders blood cultures via the dialysis line. Since the dialysis nurse is frequently not in, the nurses draw the blood via our policy using the exact method a dialysis nurse would and re-heparinize the line. Does anyone know of any other way in which this should be handled?Â
Sounds good to me as long as those staff nurses have a documented competency with this procedure. I think it would be better if left in the hands of infusion specialist though.
