Exposed Port line

I am very concerned. We have a patient with a number of co morboidities including crest syndrome with scleroderma. Her peripheral IV access was nearly impossible and her Port is viewed as a life saver to her and her husband. Yesterday the nurse caring for her noted that her port line above her access is exposed. We are an outpatient clinic in a hospital. Her nurse had one of our surgeons look at her port. He is not the surgeon who placed her port. He noted he couldn't suture the skin over the line. He recommended covering with a dry dressing watch for signs of infection . I know this patient is very dependent on blood transfusions and therefore her port but watching for signs of an infection is worrisome. There is a possibility that the area above and below the exposed line is granulated because there was a scab where the exposed portion is that has fallen off. I am very uncomfortable with this

 As well you should be

As well you should be uncomfortable with this!! It needs to be referred back to the inserting surgeon or a surgeon that will assess and either revise this site or remove and insert a new one. This should never be left with only a dressing to keep it covered!! Lynn
