I have been asked if there are any specific recommendations regarding intermittent or secondary medication infusions when there is still an additional amount of fluid in the bag especially when using the Smart Pump.
Should we let the additional fluid run through or just leave it in until the next bag is to be applied?
I would appreciate any feedback.
Thank you,
Chris Thomas
This is probably the overfill in the bag but it does contain the med so it should not be wasted. This could take more nursing time to monitor though. There are no recommendations about this aspect. What volume are you actually talking about? How much is left in IV set? Using a short PB set or a longer set? I would estimate the volume left. Then estimate what % of total dose this is and then decide based on this. If these meds are going through the pump the nurses could program a little more volume so that a is infused from bag. Lynn
