I am wondering if anyone uses extended hang-times for Parenteral Nutrition in the paediatric or neonatal setting - there is a move to increasing hang-time to 48 hours - any ideas or thoughts?
The A.S.P.E.N. Nutritional Support Patient Education Manual states "never use a bag of TPN for more than 24 hours". I would think the risk for bacterial growth would increase and the additives, especially the multi vit, will loose it stability/potency? I would say that is not a good idea to hang for 48 hours. I woulod never let a home patient do that. Hope this helps. Valorie
I totally agree with Valarie. TPN can easily grow candida. IVFE grows malessia, another fungus (my spelling may be wrong). Extended hang time will increase the risk of contamination. So I would not consider doing this. Lynn
