I need a software program for my PICC nurses to chart electronically and be mobile in different facilities...HELP

I own a company and we go to many different hospitals and nursing homes and clinics to place PICC lines. I want my nurses to chart electronically and have that data load into the database at the office.  From that data I will pull payroll, billing and quality data. I started with a Microsoft Access Database and I am finding out isn't going to work.

I welcome any insight to what programs to look at or similliar issues people have had to also meet HIPPA compliance. Thanks!

Just some thoughts ... I

Just some thoughts ...

I think the HIPAA problem is a big one you will need to work out.

Can you capture the info you need without using patient specific info...  ?

protected info, no ss #, no date of birth, no full name?  etc.

Are you ou going to get patient permission have protected health info?

Patient info is "need to know," least amount of info... necessary...

Will your client organizations support giving you that info.  Granted you need the info to do the job, but

creating a data base increases the exposure and risk of breaches.

Are you ready to manage reporting a breach, have a policy if it occurs, follow your state and federal guidelines related to protecting the info and responding to breaches. ? Are you training staff  for protecting PHI..? HIPAA?

Are staff going to electronically document in the field... then you must be sure devices are secure.. (cars get broken into, devices get stolen, are you planning encrypted pass word protected access only)....

research this

in fierceemr.com Sept 23, 2013 there is an article by Marla Durbin Hirsch titled "How one hospital uses EHR to reduce bloodstream infections"

The article refers to using an outside vascular access service and integrating iPads with the hospital charting.  If I had time I would look into it for you but there's a start.

 Im a picc nurse/clinical

Im a picc nurse/clinical specialist and a software developer. I built this exact type of software for a small Picc business (concults/payroll/billing/etc). The other post points out several issues you have to consider. There are companies that you can use to HIPAA certify your web based software. The main issue you will face is cost. Encryption is easy but you have to host your database and software on a dedicated server. These cost a lot more than typical shared web hosting and requires set up and maintenance.  The hosting companies usually do not cover these. Its certainly doable but costly if you follow all the rules.
