I am currently completing my BSN and am researching nursing associations, particularly INS. I have been unable to find answers to the following questions.
How is the INS governed?
What is the legislative agenda of INS?
How is this agenda developed? Is membership involved?
How is the agenda communicated to the membership?
Does INS partner with any coalitions:
Does the partnership influence policy on a national or state level? If yes, how?
Thanks for your comments.
You should really contact the INS office, although it will be a couple of weeks befoere you could speak with anyone that could answer your questions because the annual convention started today. Here is what I can tell you. INS is governed by an elected board of directors - all that is one their website. there is a staff of paid employees that operationalizes the direction established by the board. INS works with many governmental organizations but I have never known INS to have an active legislative agenda. By that I am assuming you mean lobbying for laws to be passed and supporting selected candidates for office. When issues come up, the board may make a decision to send information out to membership about the issue. I am an ANA member and they do have an active legislative agenda. I think this means that only a certain portion of membership fees are tax deductible. I have never seen INS issue the same information about only a percentage of membership fees being deductible. INS partners or works collaboratively with many other organizations and governmental agency but I am not sure what you mean by coalitions. For instance, INS was represented on the committee that revised the 2011 CDC Guidelines for Prevention of Intravascular Catheter Related Infections. You probably should plan in having a conversation with an INS staff member but everyone will be out of the office for at least this coming week and may not be available for a few days into the next week. Thank you Lynn for the timely and informative response. I did get some information from their website and have been a member since before obtaining CRNI many years ago, but have never seen anything associated legislatively with the questions for my research. I've been reading your posts for years and have found that if you don't know, it probably isn't out there! :)
