Is there any correlation between the length of a PIV and the rate of infiltration? Does a longer IV (1.75") have a lower infiltration rate than a shorter IV (1.25")? Depth and amount of purchase in the vein are involved as well.

When inserted by US, there is a high rate of infiltration in many studies. This is attributed to the catheter being too short. Infiltration occurs very soon, usually within 24 hours.

Lynn, Could you please reference some of the studies that you're referring to.
Thank you.

Many of the USGPIV studies discuss this and this is prevalent in the radilogy literature for contrast injection for CT.
