Another nurse mentioned to me that they use B12 pacifiers prior to IV starts & lab draws. It's calming and decreases pain reception. It used to come in a small bottle with a nipple but was changed to a pacifier that contains the B12. After the order is given it is brought up from the pharmacy. I can't find any info about it. Does anyone else use these & do they work well? Denise
I have seen literature on using glucose based methods to relieve pain in infants but not B12 vitamins. Have you done a literature search yet to see if there is anything published on this? Did your colleague tell you who the manufacturer is for this pacifier? Lynn

We use Orasweet or Sweet-ease on pacifiers for the calming and decreased pain reception. It works great!
Thanks for the update. I found out that the nurse that had given me the info had made a typo--it should have been a D, not B12 which made a whole lot more sense. Although curiously I did find a lot of info on using B12 for pain in patches etc. for young children & teenagers with chronic muscular pain. I thank you all for your comments and plan on trying to get the pacifiers for our neonatal & pediatric pts. If you have a particular brand that works well please let me know. Denise
The brand of pacifiers that we use (and that work very well) are Soothie. They have several sizes. We use the newborn size (green) mostly. I believe the different sizes also vary in firmness.
