I have always been taught to check for blood return each time a PICC is accessed. I have a family member who has a Bioflo PICC in. I've never used one of these. Her home health nurse is telling her that she shouldn't check for blood return regularly because it can cause it to clot easier. Ridiculous? I think so. I read up on this PICC and it is supposed to be made of material designed to prevent thrombus? Anyway, my family member now has a persistent withdrawal occlusion. She has been checking for blood return with every access, as instructed by me. I don't have a copy of INS standards. Is this addressed in those? I'd like to have something to show the home health nurse. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance.
Yes in the standard on Parenteral fluids and meds and flushing and locking. Lynn
