PIV in same arm as Passport

Contraindicated?  OK to do?  The Passport is in the upper arm, the PIV is in the lower forearm.  I couldn't find any standard in INS that talks about this.

The port WAS accessed and in use - they needed additional access.

Thanks in advance!

 Anything not addressed in

Anything not addressed in the 2011 INS Standards means that there was no evidence to address a standards statement. All standards and guidelines documents must be based on evidence - no evidence = no statements. The lit search was completed in mid 2010. I don't know what is in the literature about this question since then. IMHO, if another catheter in the same extremity as any PICC or peripheral port can be avoided, it should be avoided. So it comes down to a risk vs benefit assessment for that patient. The dynamic duo of thrombus and infection would be the concerns. Lynn
