I know a few years ago there was a very good article on the contamination from splashback when priming the IV line and letting the fluid drip on floor or into the hand basin. I jsut cant seem to find it. Can anyone help, seems its still considered an OK thing.
thanks in advance
I am not familiar with the article you are referring to. Priming all IV sets requires that the fluid be allowed to run somewhere. As long as the male luer end of the set is open, fluid is flowing freely until all air is purged from the set, and that male luer is not allowed to touch anything, I do not see the problem. There should not be any splashback allowing contaminated fluid to touch the male luer. Lynn
