My question refers to the wire that is inside the lumen of a PICC. Has anyone ever heard of inserting a second wire into one of the other lumens of a multi-lumen PICC to "stiffen" the catheter for insertion?
I have heard of people doing it. I have never done it. It is not an evidence-based practice. We did not find anything in the literature for this practice to include it in the INS SOP. Until we have some evidence, it could be dangerous. And it would be off-label use unless the manufacturers include instructions about this practice and I don't think they do. Lynn
