A discussion about this topic started, per INS this procedure is not recommended as of P&P for Infusion Nursing 4th edition, this is due to lumen size and viscosity of blood. Does this continue to be best practice? Thanks.

Anecdotal discussion show that therapeutic phlebotomy has been successfully performed from several types of CVADs, however I am not aware of any published studies on this practice. Publications would establish the evidence needed to address this issue in the Infusion Nursing Standards of Practice, and that research is not available yet that I know about. However you should conduct a literature review to see if new studies have been published. Lynn
